Fragranza Perfume Shop
The design for this small perfumery in a downtown shopping center in Portland, Oregon pivots around the anticipation of gift receiving. A box can hold anything. In the case of perfume, the physical contrast of the content from the container provides a particular surprise as one often uncovers an organically shaped bottle of solution from a simple, common box.
We wanted to provoke a similar experience for the gift giver as they enter the shopping space. The project is an extruded section inspired by the sensuous form of a perfume bottle and is then inserted into the store volume. CNC technology is used for its ability to fabricate curvilinear forms as well as for its ability to streamline the drawing/construction process.
The exterior of the structure is wrapped with a polyurethane treated canvas stretched tight to the frame. Fluorescent "light sticks" are then mounted to the surface turning the canvas into a glowing screen on the interior, casting a golden hue reminiscent of the color of the company's proprietary perfume. The interior of the space is finished with white lacquered wood slats that twist fluidly at key locations to provide shelving for the store product and conceal storage drawers throughout. The end wall of the space features a clear plastic surface inflated with air - showcasing the vehicle for scent delivery.
