Rubik's House: Construction fall '06

This single family house explores the client’s desire for “layered privacy”. In interpreting this desire we have begun to explore layering, filtering, and veiling in the exterior shell of the building. Within this skin the massing will be derrived from a series of interconnected voids that will provide varying scales of courtyard and outdoor respite areas. We are beginning to think of the house as a hollow container.

The layered, perforated shell reveals only glimpses of what is held within. And while there is mass within the walls, the true gem of the container is the void itself. We intend to create a dynamic experience for the occupants as they move in and out of these interlocking voids/volumes. The courtyard space will celebrate both the immediate, protective qualites of the space as well as offer connection to the common area of the neighborhood and the expansive vista beyond.
